Using An Insurance Broker Turned Out To Be A Great Decision

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

In my sandwich and coffee bar in Fleet, we fortunately had a well-located store, and therefore principally relied on passing trade. I was happy with the progression of the business, and always had proper business insurance, not being much of a risk-taker myself.

However, after my business partner and I reviewed our business plan, we agreed to develop a new strategy for 2011. This was to be a five year business plan and was to grow our business significantly. Initially I was a bit sceptical as it required a large investment in our infrastructure. As you can probably tell, my business partner was more of a risk taker and so we often disagreed about new strategies.

After careful consideration and many arguments about how we should proceed, we decided to purchase some temperature controlled vehicles to start up an office delivery service for lunches. We already had one vehicle to do one off deliveries, but this was to be a new service and so we placed an order for 3 more vans, due to be delivered in two weeks time.

I happened to go to a business networking group a few nights after placing the order where I met a nice young insurance broker that was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about insurance. I told him about our new strategy and explained that I was worried about how much the vans were going to cost on the insurance. He told me that I could save money if I put our vans onto a fleet insurance policy. I told him that I thought that was a good idea, as all three were being delivered at the same time.

However, I then questioned him about our single van that was due for renewal in 3 months time. He said that I would probably save more money if I kept it on its own policy until the renewal is due and then add it to the fleet policy.

A few weeks later, I called up the broker to arrange the fleet policy and managed to save quite a substantial amount of money. I would advise anyone looking to save money on a fleet insurance policy to contact their local broker who should be able to offer valuable advice and guidance.

A good insurance broker like Coversure will be able to secure you the best available deal on your fleet insurance. Even including their broker fees, the chances are that the deal will work out cheaper because of their excellent contacts and influences in the insurance industry. fleet insurance

Truck Insurance.

Friday, May 13th, 2011

When looking into getting insurance for your truck, it should be a priority to see what cover you are getting, not just whether you have got the cheapest quote or not. You often get what you pay for with insurance and if you pay rock bottom prices, the chances are you’re not going to be covered for a lot of situations.

A business using trucks relies heavily on them to transport their product to suppliers and clients, and therefore they need to carefully consider the insurance they are going to use. There are various angles which need to be covered in the insurance, for example the business will need to cover the cost of damage to the actual truck, the possibility of being sued by the other party, and also any cargo that the truck may be carrying from damage or theft.

As trucks can vary between 3.6 tons and 60 tons, their insurance premiums are affected by their size. However, the cargo they carry can also have a large effect on the price of the insurance. Various cargo’s include:

- Livestock - Flammable materials like petrol - Valuable cargo like expensive cars (imagine crashing in to a truck load of Porsches!) - Foodstuff - Important paperwork

The list is endless

In my opinion, the very best way to make sure your truck is properly insured is to talk to a reputable insurance broker. That way you will get honest advice about what kind of truck insurance you need and also perhaps get some guidance on what other insurance requirements you have.

Finally, an insurance broker might also be able to assist in reducing claims. Many brokers offer advice in reducing the risk, and therefore reducing the price of your truck insurance. It might not be a quick fix, but by making a few changes to your working practices an insurance broker might genuinely be able to save you money on your truck insurance.

There Are More Reasons To Go To Truckfest Than Just The Monster Trucks!

Friday, May 13th, 2011

I’m really looking forward to Truckfest this year, and as a freelance truck driver, I’m hoping to be able to get some ‘cheap’ insurance while I’m there, because mine is up for renewal. Although I say I want to get cheap insurance, I know it doesn’t really exist. I’m not only going for insurance though, I’m not ’sad’! I usually take my son, and he loves the Monster Trucks!

The diversity of Truckfest is one of the best things about it. There are so many people to meet and so much to see, such as new technology brought in by companies, insurance brokers explaining their policies, large haulage firms and small owner drivers, so there really is something there for a huge range of people.

Truckfest is one of the largest outdoor events in the UK. It combines exciting family entertainment, celebrity guests and monster trucks (my son’s favourite) with industry bodies, trade stands and potential employers. Each year hundreds of trucks attend each show, from standard HGVs and fleets, to giant trucks with gleaming chrome and spectacular artwork. The whole of the trucking industry use Truckfest to highlight the very latest vehicles and industry developments to the world of trucking.

It is also there to showcase the industry to the general public and even if you aren’t a fan of trucks, there’ll be plenty to do, from the giant trade stand areas, to model shows, craft fairs and the action packed entertainment.

Truckfest will be great, and although I am looking forward to all aspects of it, I am mainly going to try and get a good insurance deal for my truck. It is better to comprehensively cover your vehicle than just go for the cheapest deal. If you can’t find a good deal at Truckfest, try talking to your local insurance broker whose experience and guidance should help you find the perfect deal.

Great truck insurance policies are often difficult to find at a reasonable price, but not impossible, using an insurance broker like Coversure who are among the best in the business, to secure you a great deal with all your personalised criteria using their contacts and influences in the industry. truck insurance

Ways To Pay Less For Your HGV Insurance But Keep The Same Cover

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

While working as a fleet manager of a distribution company in the South East of England, in control of 20 HGVs, I realised that when organising insurance, choosing a policy with excellent service is more rewarding than simply choosing the cheapest policy and not being comprehensively covered.

As a company, we have always been concerned with the number road traffic accidents we were recording and the high consumption rate of fuel. In an attempt to tackle both of these issues, we recently announced a reduction of approx. 40% in road traffic accidents involving our trucks since we introduced a new safe driving program for all our drivers. Fortunately our insurance premiums have also reduced by 25% largely due to the new telemetric system we installed 3 years ago and the introduction of our safe driver training program.

Drivers are expected to have regular on the job driver training and follow-up review meetings to discuss training in areas such as speeding, harsh braking and acceleration. Their driving is also monitored and if it is felt that more training is needed our training manage will address the problematic areas.

We have a fantastic insurance broker, who we have used for a long time now. She was instrumental in the introduction of this safe driving scheme, she provided us with advice and guidance free of charge and also helped negotiate the significant discount. On top of the telemetric system and safe driver training program, she also advised that we reduced the speed limit of our trucks from 56mph to 54mph in an effort to continue reducing the number of incidents involving our vehicles.

Although the reduction of our insurance premiums is important, we also implemented the scheme because we are dedicated to road safety, and by 2012, we aim to have reached a ‘zero’ road incident target. Although this is a difficult target, we feel that with our drivers’ and partners’ cooperation it is achievable.

To reduce your premiums without skimping on quality comprehensive cover, speak to your local insurance broker. He or she will be able to provide you free advice on how to reduce premiums on a comprehensive policy, meaning you are fully covered, and still have an affordable price!

If you are in need of insurance for a single HGV or a fleet, Coversure are an insurance broker and will find you the best deal you can get. They are well known all over the truck insurance industry. Contact them at coversure.co.uk for the best deal on your truck insurance

How To Buy and Import USA Auto Salvage

Saturday, April 23rd, 2011

One of the largest owners of car in the world in America, so it goes without saying that the USA has probably the largest quality of auto salvage for sale from insurance companies in the world. They all tend to be sold off through large salvage auction yards right across the states.

So before you jump on a flight to State near you, expecting to simply part with some cash and buy your first USA auto salvage project think again. There are certain regulations required before you get access to bidding within these salvage auctions.

The ironic thing is the USA allows the sale of salvage for export even when the documents state the vehicle cannot be sold or driven within the USA. So this is when those living outside of the USA can find auto salvage projects to import into their national country.

Before you think about buying USA auto salvage you need to do some preparation to know what you will be able to buy and what not as a non resident with no licences. Often you will also have to pay a deposit before you will be allowed to bid on anything and of course you must have registered with the auction companies. You may only be able to bid online, which also adds an extra charge.

The next option is an online service called SalvageSpareFinder. They will give you access to most cars being sold by the largest salvage auction yard company in the USA. You get a login and bid live against other bidders. You would be surprised that even large auction yards like this have on hand, people who will ship the vehicle direct to shipping export docks, ready to be shipped to your home country.

OK once the car is bought the export process begins. First you need to get the vehicle from the auction yard to a dockside big enough for international tanker ships. This is normally very easy, as these Action houses tend to have companies they work with. Then you will need to employ an export shipping agent, who will put your vehicle in a container and ship it to your local dock in your country.

If this was not enough, you will have to consider any taxes involved to import your chosen auto salvage. This could be import tax, or even some sort of sale tax, obviously the rates are different depending on what your country of residence charges.

Some Advice On Fleet Insurance

Sunday, January 9th, 2011

Fleet managers who have to book insurance for their vehicles have been in talks with their Fleet Insurance brokers to discuss a way of hindering the rise in their premiums.

According to one fleet insurance broker, the best way to ensure cheap premiums is to manage the risk that your fleet poses to underwriters as efficiently as possible and to do all you can to minimise the chances of presenting fleet insurance claims that fall into the category insurers call “fault” claims, even though to you and me, it isn’t our fault at all!

“Fault” claims include damage to your vehicles by uninsured drivers, as well as damage by weather, vandalism, and road debris, and count against you when you renew your insurance policy the next year. If you have an accident involving anything other than an insured and identifiable third party, your renewal premium will increase.

What can you do to avoid such expense? “Many of the “fault” claims made under fleet insurance policies are unavoidable” says Timothy Darling, a well respected Fleet Insurance broker based in Essex “but other can easily be avoided with a little common sense.”.

“You wouldn’t necessarily want to walk under a ladder when the chap at the top was holding a large pot of paint” said Timothy “and the same kind of approach will pay off when you try to reduce your fleet insurance costs. Take one of our most often reported claims for example. In the fleet insurance world we call it “hit whilst parked” and, not surprisingly, it involves vehicles left unattended by fleet drivers and found damaged on their return. Obviously this type of damage can happen anywhere, but it is more likely to happen if the vehicle is parked without any consideration being given to the possibility of an insurance claim.

“It may be legal to park close to the corner of a main road but, if a large vehicle needs to turn into that nearby factory, could it do so without hitting your truck? Even in a designated truck and lorry park there are some places that are a better bet if you want to avoid damage to your vehicle and the subsequent hike in your fleet insurance premiums. My advice is to try not to park too close to other vehicles which reduces the risk of damage by opening doors, and to choose a well lit spot where other drivers can see your car which will also have the effect of deterring vandals.

“I know it may sound a little ridiculous but you need to take the same sort of care in parking your car as you would when placing a valued ornament around your home and if you do, you will minimise the risk of damage and help to keep your fleet insurance costs low”.

Could The New Black Boxes Lower Insurance Premiums?

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Hauliers and couriers are using black box equipment to combat insurance fraud. This fraud has risen 70% in the last three years according to Sky News, and as a result, black boxes are being given away by some policy providers when people insure their motor. Is it unclear however, whether the driver will benefit from this, and all depends on the use of this technology reduces the risk of a claim.

Journeys are constantly recorded using wide angle video technology. The earliest footage is overwritten once the memory has reached capacity, and the footage before and after an impact is saved, not to be overwritten, and marked as read only. Minor incidents which do not trigger this technology can be recorded by hitting a specially designed ‘panic’ button.

Overall driving time, breaking strength and time and the speed of the vehicle are all saved as data on impact by the technology and can therefore be used to get a good image of the events before and after the collision.

Although this technology does not reduce the chance of a collision, it does reduce the number of fraud insurance claims. The footage saved can be used by the insurance companies to see if the claims are genuine, reducing the amount of money the insurance companies give out unnecessarily.

Although some do say that this technology does not reduce the chance of collision, there is evidence to suggest that drivers that know they are being monitored by telemetric technology drive more carefully. If the driver does have an accident, the other vehicle’s owner is allowed to see copies of the footage, and if it is deemed inappropriate, the driver may find their continued employment in doubt. Therefore if drivers are driving more carefully, there is likely to be fewer collisions.

If we can prove that this technology reduces the risk of a claim and claims that are made fraudulently are reduced. Insurance companies should expect a lower loss ratio. This should then lead to a reduction in premium and ultimately cheaper truck insurance.

Once capacity is reached on the memory storage media, the technology overwrites the earliest recorded data. Some insurers are giving away free recorders with insurance policies. truck insurance The speed of the vehicle, the breaking strength and time and overall driving time are also recorded by the technology.

Interesting Fleet Stuff

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

As an insurance guy, I’m interested in any way to bring insurance prices down. I usually deal with fleet, truck and commercial vehicle business, and I recently attended an exhibition focussing on ‘eco-friendly’ transport to see if there was any way I could derive from this some new, cheaper prices. Although the exhibition, which was held at Earls Court, wasn’t full with people, some of the stands were interesting and contained ideas that would interest fleet and commercial vehicle and truck operators.

One of the stands held a product which aids a customer when the validity of their claim is in doubt, called the ‘black box’, the evidence of which will be allowed to be used in court.

In the case he recounted to me, a truck driver has been in a collision with a car. The owner of the car, and all the passengers (more than the lorry driver remembered being in the car!) were claiming for whiplash. The truck driver claimed that it was only a minor bump, and was surprised that the driver and passengers were making such claims.

The box was able to prove to the court that the velocity with which the truck hit the car was not sufficient to have caused the injuries that were being claimed by the passengers, and this ruling saved the insurance company a lot of money.

I am unaware whether the case study is true, but the general theory appears to work. Insurance companies will be able to save a lot of money using this technology. You may think this unimportant, because the companies have plenty of money, but if cost of claims goes down, so do premiums, while at the moment, insurance frauds are costing everyone money.

This was a really interesting conversation and made the exhibition well worth attending. There were other good stands too, and I will write about these in future notes. I was impressed with the idea that we would be able to reduce the cost of fleet insurance, commercial vehicle insurance and truck insurance by keeping claims to a minimum.

I am unaware whether the case study is true, but the general theory appears to work. , but if cost of claims goes down, so do premiums, while at the moment, insurance frauds are costing everyone money. fleet insurance The idea was that you installed this gadget, and it would help you in cases where the value of a claim was in doubt.

Why Goods-In-Transit Insurance Is A Good Idea

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

Looking after other people’s positions is very important to me as a courier, meaning I was intent on making sure I had the correct insurance to cover me. The cheapest deal may have left me not being fully covered, but my careful nature meant I got the correct cover.

After starting my new business, I ensured I had everything covered within the company, including the professional indemnity, the two vans, goods in transit, employer’s liability and the company itself. I couldn’t take advantage of the savings of insuring but combining my insurance policies and using a fleet policy because I didn’t quiet quality for a mini-fleet.

I spoke to my local insurance broker, who had already arranged all my other insurances for me and she suggested that I took out a fully comprehensive commercial vehicle policy for my two vans. This included breakdown cover. Initially I had planned to go direct to a recovery company such as the AA or RAC to sort out my breakdown cover. However, my broker explained that the breakdown cover was quite comprehensive and included Roadside Recovery, Home Start or Full European cover. I decided to take the cover out which, at least meant I didn’t need to go and sort out breakdown cover elsewhere.

A couple of months later, we had one of the worst snow falls I have seen in a long time. The towns near where I lived and worked in Northumberland were virtually cut off from the rest of the country. The news reporters were advising that we didn’t go out unless we had too. I had several package to deliver around the area and couldn’t let my clients down.

I donned my winter clothing and got into my van. It was freezing cold. I had already scraped the windows that morning, but they had already started to refreeze. I could barely see where I was going and was sure I would have an accident, if I wasn’t careful. As I approached my last delivery of the day, the warning light came on the dash and so I pulled over as soon as it was safe to do so. The engine cut out and I couldn’t get it started again. It was lucky it was the end of my day, but I was worried about tomorrow’s deliveries. I called the number the broker gave me and within 20 minutes I had a recovery truck by my side. I asked the mechanic to wait while I took the package over the road. The mechanic towed me to the local garage where they quickly identified and solved the problem.

After my experience, I was very glad I had taken out the cover against breakdowns. I managed to do all the next day’s deliveries because of the quick recovery, meaning barely any impact on my business. To a business, proper insurance cover, not just the cheapest are invaluable, and listening to my insurance broker meant I was properly covered when I needed it.

d I could barely see where I was going. So, after preparing myself to go out into the cold I got into the van and set off. My local area was practically cut off from everywhere else, and the news broadcasters were advising us to stay indoors. courier breakdown insurance
